The most common method of freezing lesions is by using liquid nitrogen as a cooling solution. Temperatures for up to minus 196 degrees Celsius can be achieved. Liquid nitrogen is applied to the skin using a special spraying system. The freezing can destroy local cells causing the elimination of unwanted skin lesions. Following the cryotherapy treatment, an inflammatory response will occur causing an irritation of the skin for about a week. After that, the skin will heal normally without leaving a scar.

With cryosurgery many benign skin lesions can be treated such as hemangiomas, keratosis, and warts. It can also be used for treating precancerous skin lesions and under some types of superficial skin cancer. Sometimes it can have a positive effect on acne scars.
